Room 235 Code

Room 235 is the locked guest room in the Terror Hotel (Level 5) of Escape the Backrooms. Its padlock code is randomized every run, but it's always one of exactly three numbers, so once you know the set you're never far off.

Your run uses one of these three. The mailbox puzzle below tells you which, but if you just want through the door you can try all three in turn.
How to find the right code (the LOOK UP puzzle)
Seven of the mailboxes in the hotel mailroom are open each run, and which ones are open is random. Grab the papers from the drawers in those rooms and drop them into the mailboxes until the papers read LOOK UP. Do what it says, a code appears on the ceiling, and that's the value for your run. Punch it into the Room 235 padlock and you're in.

Why it's one of three numbers
The Room 235 padlock isn't a free-for-all combination lock. The game rolls one of exactly three preset values each run, 17564, 05938 or 89472, and the mailbox puzzle just points you at the one your run picked. That's why "the Room 235 code" has three different answers floating around online: everyone is right, they simply played different runs.
If you're stuck on the code
- LOOK UP won't spell? You're missing papers. Every open mailbox has a matching room with a paper in its drawer, collect all of them and post each one before the letters resolve.
- Can't find the reading? Once the papers read LOOK UP the number shows on the ceiling of the mailroom, so stand back and look straight up rather than hunting the walls.
- Entered the wrong one? It's a padlock, not a one-shot lock, so a wrong guess costs you nothing. If you can't be bothered with the puzzle, just try 17564, then 05938, then 89472 in turn.
Co-op: split the job. One player works the mailbox papers and calls out the ceiling number while another waits at the Room 235 padlock ready to punch it in. It halves the time you spend exposed to the Deathmoths and the Hound that share the hotel.
